Daily Inspiration: Meet Rhayne Thomas

Hi Rhayne, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

I started as a 2 year old little girl singing The Blues wherever my dad took me. I started volunteering in medical and oncology facilities as well as hospitals because I thought spending time helping others who were sick was a great way to share my healing gifts of singing and laughing.

I have continued my journey as a volunteer, and my career as a vocalist, which evolved into speaking on behalf of cancer Survivors/patients as well as creating fundraisers to help with their bills, treatments, holidays and so on.

Rhayne in the desert: healing through laughter

My cancer story was actually quite simple but, nonetheless, shocking. You see, I have been fundraising voluntarily since 1976 because I believe “we should take care of each other.”

I am a full time blues vocalist and my “shameless begging style to spread awareness” worked magic during performances. Oh boy. Since I have been telling people for centuries to “be informed and NOT in fear,” I was now in a position to walk my talk. And I did. I HAD to!

Hey Amy! I’m a Black Lesbian Rabbi!!! “and other spiritual insights!

Okay, so I’ve been told that this title is a little…um…different. Well aren’t they all? Aren’t we all? And t hat is the reason for this title. You see friends, life can be a bit discouraging sometimes and each one of us responds to it differently based on culture, race, religious beliefs and so on but that shouldn’t stand in the way of you enjoying life and all it has to offer. To make it authentic, I openly and honestly tell the story of my life’s journey and how I have arrived at this place and time. Yes I included pain, suffering, hurt, failure (as I saw it) and many other things that I didn’t think I was going to bounce back from but through the deliberate choice to conquer those things daily, I found love, inner peace, trust and many other reasons to keep moving forward.

This is not a “how to” guide or a “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mantra, but a way for you to take a real look into another person’s life so that you, too, may find your own way to enjoy each day of your journey and perhaps create one you didn’t know existed.

Rhayne, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I get my work ethic from my era of the 1970’s through the 1990’s as “your word and your handshake were a contract.”

During those eras, people said what they meant and meant what they said. If you said you were going to do something, you did it from start to finish, you went above and beyond because you took pride in your work. Those eras also took pride in themselves and, if something wasn’t quite right, you held yourself accountable and made it right.
